 Nikki Prince lives in Riverdale, California. She is a mother of two, who always had a dream to be a published romance author. Raising children as readers, gaming, cooking, reading and, of course, writing are her major passions. 

Nikki is a multi-published author and she enjoys interracial, inter-genre romances. 

However, she asked me to let you all know not to “box her in” because there is always room for growth. 

I caught up with Nikki while she was hiking in woods near Modesto and the Wizphone  was soon as hot as her prose...

Hiya Nikki...tell us about yourself.  I'm a mother of two young children under the age of ten, I'm a gamer, a writer, a reader and I love to travel.  I've wanted to write since I was 12 years old.  My dream finally became a reality this year when I was 42.  When I signed my first contract for a story I co-wrote with a friend in March 2012.

What genre do you write in?  I write Interracial Erotic Romance (Contemporary and Paranormal)

 What made you choose this genre? I write basically what I love to read.  I've been reading romance books since the age of twelve and always wanted to write it.  

My first ever published story was called Hot For Teacher.
Was it, Wiz?

Yes it was. It featured a lunchtime triple - dipple between two young sixth formers and a brunette English teacher loosely based on one at our school. I was paid forty two pounds.

Okay! I write basically what I love to read.  I've been reading romance books since the age of twelve and always wanted to write it.   

Do you work in any other genres?  No I just write romance.

Tell us about your latest project?  My latest project that just got accepted by Evernight Publishing is the second book in my Karmic Lust Series called Demon Tempted.  My first book was called Demon Mine and is already out on Amazon.  I'm currently working on several short stories.

Hahaha. I get ya. How do you write? Are you methodical? Slapdash? A binge -er? Or a 1000 word a day grinder?  


I write whenever and where ever I can.  Some days I get 1k in words and other days not so much.  But I do make sure that I write something every day no matter how big or small.  I am also a pantster.  I write by the seat of my pants, I do not plot out.

With erotica, how important is inspiration?  I think writing anything takes inspiration.  For me it comes in different forms.  Sometimes it's music, sometimes it's just a thought, sometimes it's a picture.  Just depends.  Inspiration to write anything is important.

Is the post-Fifty Shades erotica boom about to peak? What's next?  I'm not sure what's next.  I just write what I love and don't compare myself to anyone else.

Comics, art or films? Which is your favourite form of visual expression?  I love all three actually.  I have a few comics that I collect.

An Interview with S.K Whiteside

One day in October, wearing my other hat as the proprietor of The Independent Paperback Gift Shop, I put out a call for paperback books to fill the Christmas Catalogue.

A professional (Linna Drehmel) at Crushed Hearts and Black Butterfly contacted me and sent loads and loads of books on behalf of SJ Davis, the owner of the company.

Crushed Hearts is focused on young adults, and those adults who think young, and they have authors queuing round the block to work for them.

Over the Christmas Period, with the exception of two special editions, we'll be meeting the young authors at the company and also, I hope, we'll be meeting the publisher, SJ Davis  (a player in Indielit herself),  for a really serious interview about the future, e-books, paperbacks and the world of Indielit. Erotic paranormal zombie vampires are bound to make an appearance, I'm sure. 

We kick off with up and coming author S.K.Whiteside.

I'm going to call her Miss Whiteside for the duration of the interview for very good reasons - not even I know her name, which adds a veneer of mystery and suspense to the exchange. She wishes to remain anonymous.  I don't know where she lives or who she is. I don't even know if the accompanying photograph is her or not. I'm assuming it is.

Tonight, she contacted me from an underground car park underneath a big building in America somewhere and I rang her back on the Wizphone. Here's what she had to say, static and traffic noise permitting.

Tell us a bit about yourself (Miss Whiteside). What do Wizard Watchers need to know about you as a writer and as a person?

 I like to take history and twist it with a bit of modern and paranormal flare. I like to show the evolution of my characters and more often than not, my work comes off a bit dark. 

My style has been coined as being “Cinematic Literature”, I kind of like that term.  

I’m not really into romance and I hate weak female characters. I think I tend to be a literary feminist.

 I am a mother of two, a wife, and spend my non writing employment time as a Licensed Professional Counselor in the Mental Health field. I love to read, write, and of course Horror Movies.

Other than that I am just a southern girl out of New Orleans – the paranormal capital of the world (the setting for many of my stories). (hmmm debatable. Ed)

What genre do you write in. ~ I am a writer of Paranormal Fantasy, Horror, and Psychological Thriller/Suspense. I also write Paranormal Erotic Romance under a pen name.

What have you written so far?~ My debut published works were my erotic fiction.

My debut mainstream fiction was Fallen which was introduced as a teaser for my Dark Anthology, Morbid Seraphic. 

I not only selected the stories contained in the anthology but it also contains my stories Fallen From Grace, and Haunted.

My current published work is Vexed.

I find it particularly hard to find time to write with so much on my plate and hope that one day I am able to do so full time. 

Maybe someone has an eccentric old uncle on his last leg I can borrow?

This is my cousin Igor. He lives in Carpathia and as a Cauldron Maker, he's quite well off.

I was just kidding, Wiz.

Ok. Has anything been you've written been particularly successful? 

In my opinion ALL of my work has been successful but in terms of numbers Morbid Seraphic reached #1 for Anthologies on Amazon.

Number one, huh? Our first ever...congratulations.

I was very proud of that, Wiz. Vexed stayed in the top 10 on Amazon for Drama for over a week and currently sits in the top 100 after being released for 2 weeks.

Well done. I'll bet everyone at Crushed Hearts were buzzing.

The response has been fantastic and a bit overwhelming.

Tell Wizard Watchers about your latest project? What are your ambitions for it?

That's him, Wiz.! His expertise in torturing people in his works is just the touch I needed for this particular story (they don’t call him the Literary Dark Prince for nothing) and while I may be the Morbid Mistress, his brand of Dark brings the pain and suffering that is sure to leave readers with Post Traumatic Stress.

I think Vice and Virtue is brilliant and will hopefully be out at the end of the month in print and for e-reader. As for ambitions, I just want the readers to love it.

How do you relax away from the word processor? 

What is this word relax? hahahaha. I read.

What next for YA literature? What will the next five years bring for the genre. 

I am not quite sure. In a perfect world it will bring some of the most talented writers our generation have seen but perfect world would be the operative words, wouldn’t they?

Yes they would be, SK. So finally, what do fans of SK Whiteside have to look forward to in the coming year. 

Wow, well there is Vice and Virtue coming out soon, then I have my Time Keepers Daughter series coming soon, There is my Psycho Thriller “Thicker than Water” and the much anticipated “Book of Malachi”. I just hope everyone continues to read my work!

An Interview with Gladys Quintal

 The Wizard contacted New Zealand born paranormalist Gladys Quintal to discuss the paranormal, erotic and horror scene down under. Here's what Gladys had to say on the Wizphone, with a 13 hour time delay!

UK readers and Wizardwatchers won't be familiar with the name Gladys Quintal. Tell us a bit about yourself?

I am originally from New Zealand, but have lived in Western Australia for 5years now. I am a stay at home mum of 4kids and try to fit in my writing around them.

I love vampires and practically anything paranormal and have wanted to write books for as long as I can remember.

Is there an Indielit scene in the Antipodes?  Who are the names we should be looking out for and what are the hot genres?

There is an Indie community on Facebook with a lot of wonderful, talented writers. We all try to help each other out whenever we can, which is really nice. It is not like we are competing against each other, but instead members of the same family. 

Names you should be watching out for, to name just a few: Emily Hill, Clayton Zane, Jennifer Malone Wright,  Rue Volley, Willow Cross, K. B. Miller, J. H. Glaze, Nathan Squiers, Stacey Rourke, Karen Nichols, Tamela Quijas, Sabine Atkins, Kallypso Masters...... I could go on and on and on, there really is just a world of talent out there! 

Most of my friends write in the Paranormal and Horror genres like I do, but are more YA - although a couple write erotica or BDSM. So really quite a diverse group.

Tell us about your current work.

I recently released book 3 in The Dream Series: The Chosen One - which has been doing quite well.

At the moment, I have actually gone back to the very first book I ever wrote - my autobiography. It needs an awful lot of work to get it into shape and I have kind of been a bit lazy with it. I plan to realease it later in the year. 

My plan then is to write another non-fiction book about my struggles with health issues and women having problems getting diagnosed with endocrine disorders. After that, I have 2 more books planned for The Dream Series.

What genre do you write in? Who are your influences?

I write Paranormal/Horror with a touch of romance. My writing influences include: Diana Gabaldon, Barbara Erskine, Victoria Holt, James Herbert, Jeff Lindsay, Trevor Munson, Anne Rice and recently E.L. James.....

What's a typical day in the life of Gladys Quintal?

My life is pretty much Ground Hog Day!!!!! I get up, get the boy ready for school while getting his baby sister dressed and fed to take with us. Get home from dropping Jonny at school, feed the animals, put Bella down for a nap, do a bit of housework and then a bit of facebook and checking emails, attempt to write something while she is asleep - which if I am really lucky will be at least 2hours!

Once she wakes up it is lunch, a bit more housework, pick Jonny up from school, get dinner on, baths organised and kids ready for bed...... 7pm both kids are in bed and I can let out a big sigh! Then it is a mixture of promoting books and writing until the early hours, shower, bed and then start all over again in the morning. I really look forward to Fridays :)

What do your fans have to look forward to in 2013?

More of The Dream Series. I am planning a bit of a spinoff novella, or companion novella, centuring around Elizabeth - so watch out for that my horror lovers. It will be set in the time after she dies in the walled up room in her castle, while she is waiting for The Chosen One to be born.......
